I am amazed at how many of the big supermarket chains still use polystyrene and plastic in their packaging of fruit and vegetables. Especially with the information worldwide on the damage to our oceans and the landfills that are full and overflowing with non bio-degradable waste is frightening.

 

We visit a friend’s fishing cottage in the Eastern Cape regularly and in this remote spot, we find so much rubbish washed up on the beach every time we visit, mostly plastic.

TOLERANCE....

Tolerance - Perhaps I am mellowing with age, or perhaps the world is changing and taking me along with it, but to me, thinking of how I want to live my life, the word TOLERANCE comes to mind. To be tolerant of the things we cannot change, to be tolerant of people who may irritate us and tolerant of those who are ignorant or naïve. To be tolerant of ones family, work colleagues, and tolerant of other drivers on the road.

And I have to say, that since I have taken on this stance of tolerance, I am sleeping better than ever, and therefore happier. To take something intolerable, make it tolerable and add a dash of humour, can change your life.

MISTAKES....

There’s no doubt that 2020 and the pandemic have made us think differently both in business and personally. In business, we have had to adjust and make a plan in order to stay afloat and to be able to give customers what they want. One of the most challenging areas for me was in sourcing fabrics locally. I have always tried to support local, and I have a number of suppliers who I trust and who supply me with reliable, quality fabric at reasonable prices. However, a lot of my specialized fabrics are imported.

And as I look out my shop door and down the street of the once again bustling 4th Avenue, I reflect on the South African culture and the things that make it so. From the hawkers selling their beautifully crafted wares, to the car guards in their blue bibs, the residents walking their dogs to the surrounding parks, the cyclists grabbing their morning coffees, the shop owners waving to each other as they open up and prepare their stores for the day’s trade, it dawns on me what social beings we are and how important this all is to us.
